S0… New York’s Governor Elliot Spitzer has lifted the “proof of residency” requirements that had been enacted under the previous (Pataki) administration, which will make it very much easier for immigrants to get driver licenses - regardless of status.

I wonder now… how many people could conceivably get licenses - and thereby, “legitimacy” (since a driver license is one of the most frequently presented forms of photo ID) toward accomplishing other business in our country, for things like gaining admission to pilot training programs, or renting large cargo vans?

Granted, the convergence of large numbers of aliens of unknown (and unquestioned) legal residency status of getting a driver license and renting cargo vans or attending pilot school is probably quite small: so small in fact, that perhaps only 18-20 of these aliens at particular time might have also taken advantage of loosened controls on aliens’ access to credentials normally reserved for citizens and resident aliens with valid visas or other legal status.

Ya know, just like those 19 kind, well-mannered young Saudi men who volunteered their flying experience to help the pilots and aircrews of at least four airliners take a break and play some pinochle back about six years ago this September.

But “the Spitz” doesn’t care about all of that, and doesn’t want to have the state shelling out money or effort to do the job that the USCIS (formerly the INS, or more colloquially to many of our friends south of the border, “La Migra”) or any other Federal agency connected with keeping track of foreign guests in the USA.

From a purely conservative viewpoint of “separation of powers”, that is, where the states attend to the matters not specifically allocated to the Federal government in the Constitution, this might even sound like a good idea. Perhaps this is so, a rather odd case where a liberal Democratic governor would seek to preserve State’s Rights and limited government. But if he were following suit according to another facet of conservative thought, which suggests that the security and protection of the citizens of state from foreign and domestic terror and aggression is worth pursuing and is a duty of the state, then coordinating with existing resources provided by the federal government should not be wasted.

But you ask, surely immigration is not a New York State issue? No calls from so-called “militia groups” or special interest groups decrying the swarms of Québécois streaming over the border and demanding that we provide signs on the NYS Thruway in French, or enraged Ontarians looking to restore us to the obedience of the English Crown, or at least get us to stop talking funny, eh? Or how about those Aztlan M.E.Ch.A. warriors rampaging throughout the Adirondacks?

No, we aren’t southern California or Texas or even Colorado (there is an entire town of about 2,000 probably “undocumented workers” northwest of Greeley). But, we can find other disturbing things if we look hard enough… like one of 12 Jamaat al-Fuuqra compounds in which jihadists are trained to conduct “acts of Islamic Holy War” against Americans. Yup, people far more dangerous than migrant fruit-pickers or piqued Québécois.

It probably doesn’t come as any real surprise to anyone watching things in Albany, whose governmental dictates are handed down largely to the benefit of a disproportionately large and liberal constituency, most of which resides in a certain rather large city at its southern extremity. A city that, despite having suffered the brunt of the attack on Sept. 11th, 2001… is also a city housing such “educational” institutions as Columbia University, which plans to host President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran as a featured speaker. And shall this miscreant and wicked tyrant pretend to honour our lost with a wreath and much dissemblance at the altar where once stood the Twin Towers?

May the only great God and Saviour, our Lord Jesus forgive us, if indeed we have so lost our backbones in a sea change of political correctness and even the culturally suicidal drive to placate Islam and its Messenger of lies, wickedness, and destruction.
